Regulations & Conditions:
  • Customer must present a valid Passport together with Receipts, Refund declaration forms and Product themselves.
  • Goods bought from a single shop in one day whose value is written on the VAT invoices (including the total payment of several invoices of goods purchased from a single shop in one day) is at least VND 02 (two) million (excluded VAT)
  • The VAT refunded amount is 85% of the VAT amount. (The remaining 15% is bank fee.)
  • Goods not on the list of goods banned from export and not subject to prohibition on planes.
  • VAT Refund invoice is only issued at the time of purchase.
  • VAT Refund invoice is valid for 60 days from the date of purchase.
  • Goods cannot be exchanged and returned after the VAT Refund invoice has been issued.

I. What is the VAT refund in Vietnam?

The tax refund is a system where shoppers buy items at full price, including tax, and then apply for a refund on the paid tax before leaving the country. In general, tax refunds can be received by submitting the applicable receipts at a proper tax refund booth before leaving Vietnam. Since July 1, 2014, tourists have been able to effortlessly refund within 60 days from departure date.

Foreigners and Vietnamese residing abroad (except for members of the flight crew). The foreigner carries a valid passport or entry-exit document issued by a foreign country and uses that document to enter and exit Vietnam, foreigners buy goods in Vietnam and bring goods abroad.

Step 1: Receive and keep VAT refund receipts when purchasing items.

Before making your purchase, be sure to check that the retail business is a participating store of certified tax refund brands. Shops with the refund service should have signs written “Tax Refund” and have “Tax Refund” indicated on their VAT refund receipts. Present your passport to the cashier upon payment.

Step 2: Claim your tax refund at international airports
Case 1: Goods within checked baggage
  1. Claim your boarding pass, but do not check-in your baggage, and make sure to hold onto the VAT refund receipts.
  2. Show the purchased goods and VAT refund receipts to the customs officer and get the Customs Export Approval stamp on the receipts.
  3. Proceed to the oversized baggage counter at the check-in area and check in your luggage.
  4. Proceed to a nearby tax refund counter with your passport and tax refund receipt. An actual cash refund can be received in the Duty-Free Zone after security inspection and screening.
Case 2: Goods within carried baggage
  1. After security inspection and screening, Show the purchased goods and VAT refund receipts to the customs officer and get the Customs Export Approval stamp on the receipts.

  2. Proceed to a nearby tax refund counter within the Duty-Free Zone with your passport and tax refund receipt. An actual cash refund can be received here.

No. You must pay the full, VAT-inclusive price for the goods in the shop; you will get the VAT refunded once you have complied with the formalities and can show proof of legal purchase.

The order value of 2 million VND or more at registered tax refund stores/each day.

Yes. The goods must accompany you when you leave VietNam. Goods are unused and originally packaged. Moreover, you have to be ready to demonstrate those goods to the customs officer who will stamp your VAT refund form.

No. You will be refunded in cash after custom-checking the information fully.

In principle, the stamped VAT refund document is obligatory for the VAT refund. Contact the shop in which you bought the goods for information on whether they would accept other documents as proof that the goods were exported in due time and give you a refund.
